Objective This Induction Program was intended to welcome new members and prepare them for a new role.


Introduction Induction Program held at VTC was 1st step of welcoming new professionals, As B.Ed. is a professional degree course and it is mandatory for teaching posts in the school.


We came to know that attending the induction program is mandatory and a minimum of 80% attendance is required and Regular classes will start after the induction program.


As discussed by Dr. K.S. Sameera Simha Dean of VTC, in this induction program we understood that we are studying learning theories and value development.


T. D. Praveen Kumar Sir gave us a brief intro to courses and he spoke about both scholastic and co-scholastic activities that are part of the curriculum of B.Ed.


Smt. Lakshmi B.M, Assistant Professor of VTC introduced us to the college campus and discussed the importance of rules and regulations for students on the college campus and laboratory.


Our principal Dr. P.T. Meena introduced all the members and faculties of VTC to us.


Dr. G. Vijaya Kumari, Coordinator of VTC said teaching is not just a job, it is a profession where we need to follow ethics and be loyal to it. I was really motivated by the following message, ಕಳೆದು ಹೋದ ಕಾಲ ಕಳೆದು ಹೋದ ವಯಸ್ಸು ಎರಡು ಮತ್ತೆ ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವತ್ತಿನ ಕೆಲಸ ಅವತ್ತೇ ಮಾಡಿ, ಮುಗಿಸ ಬೇಕು. ನ್ಯಾಯ, ಧರ್ಮ, ನೀತಿ ಗಳನ್ನು ಗುರಿಯಾಗಿ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡರೆ, ನಾವು ನಮ್ಮ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಗೌರವವನ್ನು ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಬಹುದು.


Smt. Shridevi madam gave us instructions to make a report on the induction program. The objective behind writing this report was to identify how efficient we are at grasping the speeches and recollecting them and reflecting on them. Through this report, the teacher can understand us better by reading our reflections and knowing our likes and dislikes. This helps them to take appropriate action on issues addressed in the report.


More than 80 pre-service teachers participated in the program.

Events I like to give a brief view of the Induction Programme at VTC On 23rd morning, I reached college at 9:30 am. Someone opened the College door and instructed us to go to Lecture Hall 1. There we kept our belongings (Bag) and assembled them on the ground floor for Morning Prayer. 


One of the super seniors, who took the lead for the day, instructed us to close our eyes and sing the VTC College Prayer, all seniors started to sing, juniors (we) kept observing them. 


After that, we were told to open our eyes and sing the Kannada State song, National song, and National Anthem of India.


After that, we moved back to lecture Hall 1. Then the leader gave some instructions to meditate and remove all our negative thoughts while meditating.


Then Smt. Shridevi Madam took over the stage and welcomed the Facilitators and Principal.


On the 1st day of the 4-day induction program of batch 2019-21, on 23rd Oct 2019 at 11:00 am, which was in Lecture Hall 1, there was a general introduction about all of us. Smt. Shridevi Madam wholeheartedly welcomed the Dr. P.T. Meena Principal of VTC. 


Dr.P.T. Meena Madam took the stage and welcomed the gathering to VTC.


She then introduced all B.Ed. and M.Ed. staff and Non-staff members to all of us.


Then Smt. Shridevi Madam said Dr. Harish G.C. Sir to give a brief introduction to college.


He started his speech and started relieving the history of Vijaya Teachers College.


He said that the BHSHES (Bangalore High School Higher Education Society) managing committee at present is running several educational institutions in the city of Bengaluru and T. Narsipura near Mysore. Five of these institutes are aided, the rest are self-financing institutions. VTC was established in August 1960. It has a permanent affiliation with Bangalore Central University and is Recognised by NCTE (National Council of Teacher Education) and UGC (University of Grant Commission).


He said that on the Recommendation of the HRD, the Government of India, Karnataka state government upgraded our college to CTE (College of Teacher Education). VTC is re-accredited (Recognized) by NAAC (National Assessment and Accredited Council). Both Pre-service and In-service Teacher education programs of B.Ed and M.Ed is supported as per NCTE regulations. And VTC is located in Jayanagar, Bangalore.


Then all the juniors gathered in the classroom were made to introduce themselves one by one by standing at the podium. 


After a few people’s introductions, I went to the podium and expressed myself.


I said “Hi everyone, this is Nagashwini, I was born and bought up in Bangalore.


I studied B.E Information Science from BNMIT Banashankari, Bangalore. I completed B.E in the year 2009.


I stay in Basavanagudi.


I have opted for the pedagogy of physical science and Mathematics at VTC.


My hobbies are playing shuttlecock, cycling, doing Embroidery, developing software applications for learning management systems, and learning new technologies.


I took this profession because from childhood my ambition was to become a teacher. But when I was in PUC I liked to know about computers in depth. I came across BNMIT Engineering College which was near to my home, so I took computer as my core subject. Later I got a job to work as a web developer. 7 years I worked as per client requirements and gained practical and technical skills. Then the company was about to shift to a new location I made up my mind to resign from the job and start tuitions for kids at home. At this movement, I came to know that I need to do B.Ed. to run private tuition. So I started searching on Google for colleges that provide a B.Ed. course. After making my survey, I decided to join VTC.


I want to become a teacher because, in school, I learned good morals from school teachers; I like to share it with people who are seeking knowledge and give them the same love and affection that my teachers gave it to me. Someone has said that we should change ourselves first instead of trying to change the world.


So because of these inspiring teachers who I met in my life, I have decided that it is my turn, the wise and secure way to give back to society the knowledge and wisdom that I have gained from them. I made this personal choice and took this course because we know that necessity is the mother of all inventions. 


Also teaching is the most respected and satisfying job/profession for my soul.


I am glad and thankful to everyone at VTC that I am eligible for the course and got an opportunity to study at VTC.”


On the 2nd day of the 4-day induction program of batch 2019-21 on 24th Oct, 2019 at roughly around 11:00 am, it was in Lecture Hall 1 and our chief guest was Sri Y.K. MudduKrishna, He had come here to train us on how to sing Naada Geetha. He gave us a brief introduction about Kuvempu, the 20th century Poet (ಕವಿ) 


He said that Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa composed this song initially. And the Poem has officially declared a state anthem in 2004. Then it was modified by the committee team which was formed to reduce the poem duration.


One of the committee members was Sri Y.K. MudduKrishna. He said that the tune set by Ashwath was preferred as it was simple for public rendering. He made us learn the song with a proper tune.


On the 2nd day of the 4-day induction program of batch 2019-21 on 24th Oct 2019 at roughly around 12:30 pm, it was in seminal Hall and our chief guest was Dr. K.S. Sameera Simha, Dean and Joint Secretary, VTC. The topic on which he delivered his speech was value development. He gave an overall picture of the structure of the learning Theories. He said that we will be learning about educational psychology.


He explained Behavioral Theories.


He showed PPT on Thorndike Learning Theory – 1913.


He said that this learning theory was called the original S-R framework or Trial and Error Theory.


He gave us an example of a hungry cat, on which Thorndike had made the experiment.


In this example, the hungry cat was locked in a cage and a latch was used to lock the door of the cage. Outside the cage, dead fish was kept. The hungry cat became mad and started to scratch all around the cage to come outside and eat the dead fish. After several trials accidentally the cat’s paws touched the latch and the door opened and the cat rushed to eat the dead fish. This experiment was conducted several times by Thorndike on the same cat. He observed that the cat used fewer movements to open the latch in less time.


Then he explained the second behavioral theory by B.F. Skinner an American Psychologist (1957)


He said that Skinner experimented on Dog to show that the method of learning occurs through rewards.


Before Conditioning – Food -> Dog - Salivation; Bell -> Dog - No Salivation


During Conditioning – Bell + Food -> Salivation


After Conditioning – Bell -> Salivation


He said that before conditioning when a dog is shown food there is salivation produced in the dog mouth and when a bell is made to ring there is no salivation produced in the dog mouth. And during conditioning, both bell and food were introduced and a bell was made to ring and then food was shown, salivation is produced in the dog’s mouth. And after conditioning, if the only bell is made to ring, the dog's mouth starts to produce salivation without showing the food because the dog thinks of food when it hears the bell ringing.


He said that similarly, Kohler, a German psychologist experimented on chimpanzees and Bananas to explain the cognitive theory of learning. This theory is also called insight learning. Because Chimpanzee used its intelligence to get the banana, with the help of the box, kept near its reach, it was able to climb and reach the banana which was kept at a certain height above the chimpanzee head.


Then he spoke about “Value Development” which uses the scientific method. It begins by asking questions and then seeking answers. Also, the right way to learn science is from experiments or observation.

On 25th Oct morning after the assembly, Smt. Shridevi madam made us into 3 groups and sent us to different facilitators to show us the college different Lecture Hall, Staff Department, and office room, etc.


Three professors were involved in showing us the college building namely Dr. Praveen sir, Sri. Suresh Shetty sir, and Smt. Lakshmi madam.


For me, it was Smt. Lakshmi madam who showed us Pedagogy of Physics, Mathematics Laboratories, English, Social science and Kannada departments and Guest room and Restroom, etc…


At 1:30 we all had lunch in the classroom.


On the 2nd day of the 4-day induction program of batch 2019-21 on 24th Oct 2019 at roughly around 2:30 pm, Introduction to course was given by T. D. Praveen Kumar He said that to become an effective teacher you should learn educational psychology.


He stressed on Pitch, Gesture, and Communication Skills that a minimum criteria a teacher should possess.


Pitch – the lesson should be pitched at the right level for all students in the class.

On the 3rd day of the 4-day induction program of batch 2019-21 on 24th Oct 2019 at roughly around 11:30 pm, our chief guest was Dr. S.L. Manjunath, HOD of Kannada Department, Vijaya College. The topic on which he delivered his speech was Gandhi’s Philosophy and The Importance of NSS. Dr. S.L. Manjunath Sir gave a brief note on the role played by Gandhi during India’s freedom struggle.


Sir said that Indians have not understood the Gandhiji and his principles (ತತ್ವ) in the same manner as the foreigners have understood (or discovered about) him.


He spoke about what Gandhiji did during his stay in South Africa.


He also said that he left South Africa forever and returned to India in July 1914.


He instructed all of us to read the biography of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.


In 1921 the green and red flags were made by Pingali Venkayya and improved by Gandhi by introducing chakra and white strips.


The concept of Chakra was adopted from Konark Sun Temple on July 22, 1947. This chakra has 24 spokes, which represents 24 hours a day and the law of Dharma. The color blue was taken from the ocean and sky.


He highlighted the significance of national flag colors, saffron denotes courage and sacrifice, green denotes culture and fertility, white denotes peace, unity, and truth.

After joining NSS, it will help a person to develop love towards the country and love towards self and life. ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ ಪ್ರೇಮ ಹಾಗು ಜೀವನದ ಮೇಲೆ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.


On the 3rd day of the 4-day induction program of batch 2019-21 on 25th Oct 2019 at roughly around 3:30 pm, it was in Lecture Hall 1 and Vande Mataram's song recitation was by Siri Krishna from the 4th semester. We all recited the song together. We all got to know the tune of the song from her.


On the 3rd day of the 4-day induction program of batch 2019-21 on 25th Oct 2019 at roughly around 3:30 pm, in Lecture Hall 1, our chief guest was Sri Raja V, Kannada Professor, National High School, Basavanagudi. The topic on which he delivered his speech was Professional Ethics. Sri Raja sir said us to refer to the book Rangannana Kanasina Dinagalu written by M.R. Srinivasa Moorthy.


He said that everyone is beautiful by doing their duty. He said, “Doing my duty makes my beauty”.


He said “ಉದ್ಯೋಗಂ ಪುರುಷ ಲಕ್ಷಣಂ (Here Purusha to be considered as any human being)”.


I like to share a story with you which was told by Sri. Raja sir to us the other day.


A teacher by chance fell inside the well while walking on the road. After some time he saw some of his students were passing by, seeing them he called them for help. When students approached him, he said to them ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಮೇಲಕ್ಕೆ ಎತ್ತಿ. The students discussed among them for a while and said that we won’t lift you, he questioned students whether they were angry with the teacher, then they answered him that “No they were not angry with you but in class, you had said to us that we have to come up in life (uplift in life) by ourselves and not take help of others, so we won’t be lifting you up”. Then the teacher understood the situation and said: “He had said that in life you have to come up on your own and not in this type of situation, so take me out of the well (Lift me from well)”. The students understood that and lifted him from the well.


This was just a joke that made us laugh and understand the scenario that how students take up things (Misunderstands) what teacher says in class in their perception and little knowledge, where the teacher cannot be blamed for his/her teaching all the time.


Now I will give a glimpse of the thoughts and the message he gave to illustrate the moral


Knowledge is like an ocean.


Take a cup and fill it with water. Now the cup is full of water. Next, take a bucket and fill it with water. Now the bucket is full of water. So water takes the form of a container.


Then take n number of cups and fill it with water from the ocean but also the ocean does not become empty. Similarly, knowledge can be acquired by n number of people but it does not get extinct (vanished/disappeared).


On the 4th day of the 4-day induction program of batch 2019-21 on 25th Oct, 2019 at roughly around 11:00 am, in Lecture Hall 1, our chief guest was Dr. G. Vijaya Kumari who is the Co-Ordinator at VTC, The topic on which she expressed her thoughts was ‘Am I a Teacher’. Smt. Shridevi madam welcomed Dr. G. Vijaya Kumari Madam with immanence pleasure.


When we think of this madam we can never forget her achievement in the following arena 


That she was the first one to establish a mathematics laboratory at VTC.


She has received “The Best Teacher Award” from Lions Club.


She was the chairperson of the textbook committee.


Dr. G. Vijaya Kumari Madam took the stage and started to address the students gathering.


In her speech, she said that everyone here has come to become a teacher and should like their profession. Change is inevitable. Change is not constant. Change is required to survive.


She showed a motivational message through this fiction story.


We should showcase our willpower to live a successful life.


Keep mind like a sponge rather than stone, so that it absorbs many things.


She said that the important person in one’s life is the one you are currently living with at this movement. Important time is the time you are spending right now. Important work is the work you are doing right now.


National Knowledge Curriculum (NKC) has indicated “knowledge is power”. 


But in the 21st century only considering “knowledge is power” is not sufficient rather skill and competency are necessary.


UNESCO said that education needs to be embedded in society.


As society is not constant the education which is embedded in society becomes dynamic.


UNESCO changed the term teacher to Facilitator.


From making the students “learn” was changed to “learn to learn” which was changed to “learn to live”, which was again changed to “learn to live together”.


21st-century skills are Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Information Literacy, and Media Literacy.


She showed us the video 'Do Flowers Fly' and said to "observe the video and give your thoughts on it." 


Each one started sharing their experience based on what observation they made.


Now let me tell you some of the observations which were made by pre-service teachers after watching the silent animated film


The child was struggling to study during the exam 


He wanted to fly like a butterfly


He had so many questions to ask but was not allowed to speak inside the class


Scared to go to school, no fun and enjoyment at school


The child was not able to enjoy his childhood


There was always a fear towards the teacher


He was learning from his own experience


Exam fear and study during the night makes him dull 


Repeat what the teacher tells


They were made like parrots, no extra answer is encouraged


Teachers are seen as very scary in his nightmare


 


Then she showed a short movie in which there was a misunderstanding and gap between what the student learned and what the teacher had taught.


At last, not least she told us to be a responsible, proud, enthusiastic teachers.


On the 4th day of the 4-day induction program of batch 2019-21 on 25th Oct 2019 at roughly around 12:40 pm, it was in Lecture Hall 1 and there was a College Prayer recitation by Siri Krishna from the 4th semester. We all recited the song together. We all got to know the tune of the song from her.


Conclusion I was happy to listen to such an excellent speech by chief guests at VTC. In the future, even I like to illustrate similar stories to students and motivate them in their life. 


As the popular proverb states ಗಿಡವಾಗಿ ಬಗ್ಗದ್ದು ಮರವಾಗಿ ಬಗಿತ್ತೆ, and another proverb states ಇವತ್ತಿನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ನಾಳಿನ ಪ್ರಜೆ. What do we understand by these proverbs is that the teacher has a duty and responsibility in shaping a student's career and has an influence on their life. So the teacher is a role model in a student’s life, and the student spends most of the time with a teacher in the classroom. So he/she will learn from observing the teacher, so fostering healthy relationships with students is important along with that teachers must build is strong relationships with parents, school staff, and colleagues in the community, guidance counselors, and administrators.


Through training minds everyone can gain knowledge and “We believe that every child learns at a different pace”.


Gaining knowledge is a long process of dedication, patience, and continuity. Gaining knowledge is not limited to anything; it can be gained by the person all through the life of any age. Becoming a teacher is my ultimate goal in life, to achieve this I need to plan, execute and take appropriate steps.


At VTC I feel like “Adding life to years rather than years to life”. And like to dedicate me as a lifelong Lerner.


For me, teaching means to nurture a life.


I like the culture and atmosphere of the college. Our College premise is very clean (Cleanliness is next to godliness). I always dream that after earning a B.Ed. degree, I will be eligible to get a job based on my skillset in secondary and higher secondary schools, and our college has a good placement center. The placement center is headed by Dr. Harish sir.


As soon as I enter college, the first thing that comes in front of the eye is the Saraswathi deity. I pray daily to her to give me good knowledge and wisdom and then enter the classroom. I respect all the teachers at VTC, who are all highly qualified and down to earth, they treat us friendly and facilitate us with smiles on their faces.


By studying at VTC, we will get an identity in society as good human beings; we will get a chance to explore ourselves and society will recognize us as a student of VTC.


In other schools and colleges, only a few make use of the opportunity, but at VTC, everyone is given the opportunity, as Smt. Shridevi madam said that everyone should show their talents on VTC talents day. Also at VTC, we have no fear of losing attendance if we participated in extracurricular activities as it is part of the curriculum. They use a biometric system so there will be no error while taking attendance manually. Another difference is preparing a reflective diary as Smt. Shridevi madam said, "Maintaining documentation is very important in B.Ed."


I wish unlike my B.E last year in B.Ed., we will be able to manage time properly and study in advance and cover all portions on time. As we know, all work and no play make Jack a dull boy.

In the 1st semester, we will learn through playing, in the 3rd semester we will have a bit of positive stress which is necessary to achieve our goal and with dedication and hard work after giving an interview you will surely be placed in a job by the 4th semester.


As Smt. Lakshmi Madam said that this class is a heterogeneous batch (as people are from different religions, cultures, ages, gender, state) which will help us to learn to live together. And each student will get a chance to mentor their peers.

  • In a cyclic quadrilateral (Concept), the sum of each pair of opposite angles is 180 degrees. If a quadrilateral has one pair of opposite angles that add to 180, then you know it is cyclic.

     

  • A trapezoid is cyclic if, and only if, it is isosceles. (Fact)

My Reflections/ Experience of using the ICT tool Geogebra:

 

I had wonderful experience of using this ICT tool called Geogebra. It was very easy for me to use this tool to create examples of cyclic quadrilateral with dynamic measurements, which is very difficult to do with out this tool. When I had to present this lesson plan, I was worried regarding the presentation, thanks to geogebra that made this skill of illustration approach very easy. I was able to deliver this lesson plan successfully in front of my the observer and teacher. Creating 4 angles of cyclic quadrilateral which is inscribed on a circle is a complicated task, if tried to attempt it manually by construction method. But this geogebra tool made this complex task easy like a magic and also I was able to do this in short period of time.

Also doing just one working file, I was able to create plenty of images with different measurements.

I was able to extract this file as png format and use it in my lesson plan. I was able to create screen recording of the presentation as mp4 format, so that without any software installation on others computer can, we can use this video to show the demo or presentation, so it is supported on any operating system, it also works offline.

I also like to thank the IT for change team for letting me know about this Geogebra tool, which was useful for me while presenting my skill at VTC. While preparing and presenting my skill, the use of this tool made me confident to move forward to use illustration method prove this theorem with Inducto deductive approach. I am sure that in real classroom students will better understand this concept if I use the images from geogebra. In my career I will surely use this tool effectively to transact the lessons to students without fail. I am glad that this type of free software are helping the teachers in plenty of ways across the globe.
