Vedic Chants with Meaning in English

 1) Lord Maha Vishnu

Santhakaram Bujaga sayanam Padmanabham suresam,

Viswadharam Gagana sadrusam Megha varnam shubangam

Lakshmi kantham kamala nayanam Yogi hrid dyana gamyam

Vande vishnum bava bhayaharam sava lokaika nadham 3


I bow before the God Vishnu,

Who is personification of peace,

Who sleeps on his folded arms,

Who has a lotus on his belly,

Who is the God of gods,

Who is the basis of earth,

Who is similar to the sky,

Who is of the colour of the cloud,

Who has beautiful limbs,

Who is the consort of Lakshmi,

Who has lotus like eyes,

Who is seen by saints through thought,

Who kills all worries and fears,

And who is the lord of all the worlds.

I bow before the God Vishnu,

Who has four arms,

Who has a conch and wheel in his hands,

Who wears a crown and ear globes,

Who wears yellow silks,

Who has lotus like eyes,

Who shines because of Kousthbha ,

Worn in his garlanded chest.


Megha syamam Peetha kouseys vasam Srivatsangam Kausthuboth bhasithangam

Punyopetham pundareekayathaksham Vishnum vande sarva lokaika natham 4


I bow before that God Vishnu,

Who is the lord of all the universe,

Who is black like a cloud,

Who wears yellow silks,

Who has the sreevatsa on him,

Whose limbs shine because of Kousthubha,

Who has eyes like an open lotus,

And who is surrounded by the blessed always.

2.Goddess Mahalakshmi

Lakshmeem ksheera samudra raja thanayam,

Sri rangadhaameswareem ,

Dasi bhootha samastha deva vanithaam ,

Lokaika deepthanguraam,

Sriman manda kataksha labdha,

Vibhava brahmendra gangadaraam,

Twaam trilokya kutumbinim sarasijaam,

Vande mukunda priyaam.

Salutations to Goddess Lakshmi,

Who is the daughter of king of ocean of milk,

Who is the consort of Lord of Sri Ranga,

Whose maids are the deva maidens,

Who is the lighthouse for the entire world,

Whose side long glances add fame,

To Brahma, Shiva and Indra,

Whose family is all those in three worlds,

Who appears in lotus ponds,

And who is the darling of Lord Mukunda.

Raksha thwam deva devesi, deva devasya Vallabhe,

Daridryath thrahi maam Lakshmi krupaam kuru mamo pari

Oh Godess of all Gods who is the consort of the God of Gods, please protect me,

Save me from poverty and Oh Goddess Lakshmi show mercy on me


3. Godha /Aandal

Sri Vishnu chitha kula nandana kalpa valleem,

Sri Rangaraja harichandana yoga drusyaam,

Saakshaath kshamaam karunayaa kamalamivaanyaam,

Godham ananya sarana saranam prapadye.

Oh wish giving tree in the garden of Joy of Vishnu Chitha,

Who along with Rangaraja looks like the harichandna tree ,

Who is real patience and in her pity to others she is like Goddess Lakshmi ,

As I do not have any one to surrender , I seek Godha as my only refuge.

.Vandhe Radha Padambojam , Brahmadhi sura vanditham,

Yath keethi keerthanenaiva punaathi bhuvana thrayam

I salute lotus life feet of Radha which is saluted Brahma and other devas,

And by praising its greatness, the three worlds get purified.


4) Kamala

Omkara roopini devi Vishudha sathva roopini ,

Devanaam Janani , thwam hi prasanna Bhava ,sundari.


Oh pretty goddess who has the form of “Om” .

Who has the very pure form being ,

And who is the mother of devas , please become pleased with me.


5)  Mathsya avathara

Noonam thwam Bhagawan sakshath harir narayano avyaya,

Anugrahaya bhoothanam dhathse roopam jalokasam. 1

Hey Lord Vishnu who does not have death,

You ,who is the real Lord Vishnu,

Even took the form of living being in water,

For showering your blessings on all beings


6) Koorma avathara

Namami they deva padaravindam,

Prapanna thapopa samatha pathram,

Yan moola hethou yathayo agna soru,

Samsara dukham Bahiruthkshi panthi. 1

Oh God I salute your lotus like feet,

Which is like an umbrella preventing heat,

Due to its basic reason the learned sages,

Get rid of the sorrows of this world from their mind.


7) Varaha avathara

Nama swethavarahaya maha kolaya bhoopathe,

Yagnangaya shubhangaya sarvagnaya paramathmane.

Sthrvathundaya dheeraya para brahma swaroopine,

Vakra damshtraya nithyaya namo antharyamini kramath.

“Salutations to the white boar, to the king who is the great boar,

Who is part of the sacrifice , whose all body parts are holy,

Who is the all knowing one and who is ultimate God.,

Who has fierce horn, who is courageous , who is of the form of ultimate,

Who has slanted teeth , who is for ever and who is inside everything.”


8) Lord Lakshmi Narasimha avathara

Srimat payonidhi nikethana chakra pane,

Bhogeendra Bhoga mani rajitha punya moorthe,

Yogeesa saswatha saranya Bhabdhi potha,

Lakshmi Nrsimha Mama Dehi Karavalambam.


Oh Great God Lakshmi Nrsimha,

Who lives in the ocean of milk,

Who holds the holy wheel as weapon,

Who wears the gems of the head,

Of Adhisesha as ornaments,

Who has the form of good and holy deeds,

Who is the permanent protection of sages,

And who is the boat which helps us cross,

This ocean of misery called life,

Please give me the protection of your hands.


9) Vamana avathara

Hemadri shikarakaram,

Shudha spatika sannibham,

Poorna chandra nibhanam,

Devam dwibujam, Vamanam smareth


I meditate on Vamana with two hands,

Who has the form of the peak of golden mountain,

who resembles a pure crystal,

And who has a face like the full moon.


10) Parasurama avathara

Devam naumi remapathim , ranapatum, bhaswath kireedanchitham,

Kodandam sasaram karena dhadhatham vamena chanyena cha,

Aartha thrana patum kutarasamatham kanda chidham bhasuram,

Smasru prasphurithananam sura thanum Ramam sada saswatham.


I salute that Rama with an axe,

Who is being saluted by devas,

Who is the consort of Lakshmi,

Who is expert in fighting in war,

Who shines due to his crown,

Who holds Kodanda in his right hand,

And arrows in his left hand,

Which are capable of saving the oppressed,

Who is armed with the terrible white axe,

Who is effulgent with light,

And who has a well proportioned heavenly body,


11) Sri Rama avathara

Sri Raghavam dasarathathmaja aprameyam Sithapathim raghu varaanvaya rathna deepam,

Aajanubahumaravinda dalayathaaksham Ramam , nisa chara vinasa karam Namani


I salute the killer of Rakshasas, who belonged to Raghu clan, who was the incomparable son of Dasaratha,

Who was the Lord of Sita, who is the light made of gems of the Raghu clan,

Who had hands hanging up to his thighs and who is Rama who had eyes like petals of lotus.


Vaidehi sahitham suradruma thale haime Maha Mandape,

Madhye pusahpakamasane mani maye veerasanr samsthitham,

Agrai vachaspathiprabanjana suthe thathwam muneebhya param,

Vyakhyaantham bharathathibhi parivrutham Ramam bhaje shyamalam.


I salute that black coloured Rama,Who sits along with daughter of Videha,

And in the company of Bharatha and others,

Inside the golden shed beneath the holy tree of Karpaga,

On the seat of flowers bedecked with jewels, Built in its centre,

Explaining the essence of knowledge,To the assembled sages and to the son of Anjana.


12) Balarama avathara

DEvadhi deva bhagavan kamapala namosthuthe,

Namo ananthaya seshaya sakshad Ramaya they nama.

Salutations to the god of gods who fulfills our wishes ,

Salutations to Anantha and Adhi seasha who , salutations to Balarama himself.


13) Sri Krishna avathara

Kasthuri thilakam lalata phalake, Vaksha sthale Kousthubham,

Nasagre nava moukthikam, Kare thale Venum, kare Kankanam,

Sarvange hari chandanam cha kalayan kande cha mukthavaleem,

Gopa sthree pariveshtitho Vijayathe Gopala Choodamani.

Victory to the gem among Gopalas , who is surrounded by Gopa ladies,

Who has a musk thilaka on his forehead, Kousthubha gem on his chest,

A new gem studded nose drop at the end of the nose ,

Flute in his hand, Bangle on his hand,

Who is coated with sandal paste all over and wears a necklace of beads on his neck.

Hey Gopalaka, Hey krupa jala nidhe , Hey Sindhu kanya pathe,

Hey Kamsanthaka , Hey Gajendra karuna paarina, Hey Madhava,

Hey Ramanuja, Hey Jagathraya guro, Hey Pundareekaksha maam,

Hey Gopi jana nadha, palaya param Janami nathwam vinaa.

I do not know any other God greater than you, Oh Lord of people of Gokula,

Oh cowherd, Oh ocean of mercy, Oh husband of daughter of ocean,

Oh killer of Kamsa, Oh God who took mercy on Gajendra, Oh Madhava,

Oh brother of Rama, Oh teacher of three worlds, Oh God with lotus like eyes.


14) Vishvaksena

Yasya dviradha vakthraadhya parishadhyaa para satham,

Vignam nignanthi sathatham vishvaksenam thamasraye

I seek protection in God Vishvaksena, who has an elephant face,

Who has two tusks and whoi removes humdreds of obstacles


15) Sri Hayagriva

Jnananandamayam devam nirmala sphatikakrutim,

aadharam sarvavidyaanaam Hayagreevamupasmahe.

I worship Lord Hayagreeva, who is the very basis of all knowledge,

pure as a crystal, and who is the God fully pervaded with joy of wisdom

Chinthamanir Hayagreevo vasyathya nishevitha,

Soapi sarvarthadho nrunaam kimuthaa souhayanana.

When the man who worships Hayagreeva makes him his own,

Can give you health, wealth an prosperity , where is the doubt that Hayagreeva can do so.


16) Lord Hanuman

Manojavam marutha thulya vegam,

Jithendriyam budhimatham varishtam,

Vathathmajam vanara yudha mukyam,

Sree rama dhootham sirasa namami.

I bow my head before,

The emissary of Lord Sri Rama,

Who is faster than mind,

Who is as fast as the wind,

Who has won over his senses,

Who is wisest among the learned,

Who is son of God of wind,

And who is the chief among,

An army of monkeys.


Akshadhi rakshasa haram, Dasa kanda darpa,

Nirmoolanam, Raghuvarangri saroja bhaktham,

Seetha vishahya Ghana dukha nivarakam tham,

Vayo sutha, galitha bhanu maham namami.


I salute Him, who shines like the Sun,

Who killed Rakshasas like Aksha,

Who destroyed the pride of the ten headed,

Who is the devotee of lotus feet of Rama,

Who removed the great sorrow of Sita,

And who is the son of Wind God.


17) Lord Garuda

Nama pannaga nadhaya Vaikunta vasa varthine,

Sruthi Sindhu sudothpada mandharaya guruthmathe.

Salutations to the Lord of Serpents,

Who resides in control of Vaikunta,

Who like the mandara mountain,

Churned the ocean of Vedas,

And has the nectar of it on his legs


18) Sudarsana Chakra

Sudarshana mahajwala praseedha Jagatha pathe,

Thejo raase praseedha thwam koti surya amitha prabha


Be pleased with me Oh Sudarshana of great luster who is the lord of the universe ,

Oh shining one who has luster more than one crore suns, be pleased with me


19) Thulasi(Vrinda) devi

Gangeya champeya tadith vinindi-

Rocih pravaha snapitatma vrinde

Bandhuka bandhu dyuthi divya vaso

Vrnde namaste charanaravindam

My salutations to your lotus like feet ,Oh Vrinda devi,

Who is surrounded by the glow similar to Bandhuka flowers*,

Whose splendour puts to shame gold, Champaka** flower and lightning,

And by the flow of that same splendour you continuously anoint your devotees,


20) Lord Venkateswara

.Kalyanadbutha gathraya, kamidartha dhayine,

Srimad venkata Nadhaya , srinivasaya mangalam.

Auspiciousness to Lord Srinivasa who is the lord of Venkata mountain,

Who has a wonderful auspicious form and who gives wealth that is desired.


Sriya kanthaya kalyana nidhaye nidhayerdhinaam,

Sri Venkata nivasaya , Sri Venkatesaya Mangalam.

Auspiciousness to the Lord of Venkata mountains, who is the Lord of Lakshmi ,

Who is the treasure of good , who is the treasure to his devotees who lives on Venkata mountains.


21) Ranganatha

Saptha prakara madhye sarasijamuklothbhasamane vimane,

Kaveri Madhya dese phanipathi sayane, sesha paryanga bhage,

Nidhramudhrabhiramam katinikatasira parswavinyastha hastham,

Padmadhathree karabhyam parichithacharanam rangarajam Bhajeham.


I salute that Lord of Ranga,

Who sleeps in the yogic pose,

On the bed of Adhisesha,

Below the tall dome**,

Which resembles a lotus bud ,

And is surrounded by seven ramparts,

And which is in between two Kaveri rivers,

With his right hand near his crown,

And his lotus like merciful left hand,

Pointing towards his feet which take care of us all.

22) Varadaraja

Namastha hasthi sailaya sriman ambuja lochana,

Saranam thwaam prapannosmi pranatharthi harachyutha

I salute the lord of Hasthigiri, who is God with lotus eyes,

I seek your protection by my absolute surrender,

Oh Achyuthawho destroys problems of those who pray to you.

Nindiththaachara karanam nivrutham kruthya karmana ,

Paapiyamsam amaryaadham pahi maam varada prabho

I detest doing rituals , I am free from doing prescribed duties,

I am a sinner as well as disrespectful , Please save me oh Lord Varada


23) Guruvayurappan

Maru mandhira vasa , mangalya moorthe,

Jagannadha , Govinda Vishno , Murare,

Bhavad bhakthi randha sphuranthi naraanaam,

Paramananda peeyusha yusham dadadhaathi.


Oh Lord who lives in Guruvayur who is personification of good events,

Oh Lord of the universe , Oh Govinda , Oh Vishnu , Oh killer of Mura,

That man whose mind is completely filled with your devotion,


24) Panduranga

Maha Yoga Peete thate Bheema Radhya,

Varam Pundarikay Dathum Muneendrai,

Samagathya thishtanthamanandakandam

Parabr- ahma lingam baje pandurangam.

I worship that Panduranga, who is the absolute Brahman,

Who is the source of immense happiness,

Who stays in the great seat of yoga, in the banks of Bheema,

Along with great seers to fulfill the boon to Pundarika.


25) Jagannatha

.Rakthamboruha darpa banjana maha soundarya nethra dhvayam,

Muktha hara vilambi hema makutam , rathnojjwalath kundalam ,

Varsha megha samana Neela vapusham graiveya haranvitham,

Parswe chakra dharam prasanna vadanam neeladri nadham Bhaje.


I sing about the lord of blue mountains who has a pair of eyes,

Which are very pretty and destroy the pride of red lotus flowers,

Who wears a peral necklace , gold crown and shining gem studded ear globes,

Who has the colour of the blue water rich clouds, who wears garlands ,

Who holds the divine wheel on his side and who has a o pleasing face
