Brief Introduction about activity

As part of post internship activity of 4th sem B.Ed., at VTC we were supposed to work with community based project for social welfare.

One project guide MPK sir and one mentor TDP sir were there to support us to carry out this community based project.

MPK sir gave orientation and instructions to carry out this project.

Then TDP sir gave us some ideas on how to carry out this project.

Under their guidance and constant support, be begin our journey to work with the community for creating awareness and to bring change in society.

Purpose of selecting this activity

In today’s era Addiction is not restricted to chemical or natural substances.  Behavioural addiction is  an emerging addiction noted these days. Technological Advancements are changing rapidly and new  technology becomes available easily  – something which is contributing to upswing of excessive mobile phone use.

The purpose of this activity was to create awareness about how to use the mobile in right way and not get addicted to it. Also to create awareness among youths about various physical and psychological ill-effects associated with it and to highlight how young minds are impacted by mbile phone usage by conducting a survey using a standard tool mobile phone addiction scale developed by Dr.A.Velayudhan and Dr.S.Srividya (2012).

Providing a situation

MPK sir gave brief introduction about the community based project and discussed the purpose and need for carrying these projects.

He discussed about meaning of community, a part of society where there is different culture.

He explained the relation between community and teacher. School is minature society. So we teachers need to create value oriented society from school.

What are the challenges faced by society in present scenario, we as teachers need to think how to find solutions to these problems.

Team members for formed and mentor were alloted for every team.

There was also leader to lead the team in right direction, take decision behalf of team members, go to colleges and take permission, etc.

Description of daily activities

Execution of Project

After preparing action plan.

On Day 1: 23.8.2021

The plan was executed accordingly with slight modification based on situation and by being flexible to the circumstances.

We took permission from Dr. Lakshminarayana sir to give awareness to avoid excessive usage of mobiles among youths. There were around 35 students.

We conducted awareness program on mobile usage in present day and conducted survey on mobile addiction using standard mobile addiction scale developed by Dr. A. Velayayudhan and Dr. S. Srividya in 2012, for BSC Electronics students.

We got permission from Dr. Ganesh Babu sir (Associate professor), Dr. Lakshminarayan sir (Associate professor) and Dr. Nalini madam (HOD. BCom), to take online classes for B.com students, the next day.

We created google meet link and shared the details of program on whatsapp with time, date and link.

This was shared to the students by their teachers.

We spoke to BHS college Principal Dr. Chanrashekar and other members and asked permission to provide a class for us to conduct the program.

He said to come at 24.8.2021, at 12:50 pm.

Then I went to Surana college and took permission from college and informed all my team members about this and come to college tomorrow by 9:00 am. All my team members agreed.

And the evening and night we had online meeting from home and planned for the next day’s presentation, created the google forms and spreadsheet to conduct survey.

On Day 2: 24.8.2021

Morning when we reached the Surana college at 9:00 am we all discussed for some time and then at sharp 9:30 am to 10:30 am we took 2 parallel classes by team of 5 prospective teacher in each class.

The students were active participants of this program.

We took photos of students for documentation purpose, thanked the teachers and Principal of Surana college for providing this opportunity.

Then we took online class at 11:15 pm to 12:15 pm also to create awareness program on mobile usage in present day and conducted survey on mobile addiction using standard scale developed by Dr. A. Velayayudhan and Dr. S. Srividya in 2012.

Then we went to BHS college and there they allotted us 2 classes, again we split into 2 groups and took 2 classes. From 12:50 pm to 1:30 pm, we engaged both the classes.

Thus, 2 day community based project program was successfully executed.

In all the awareness program we spoke about eye damage, hearing problem, brain damage, vibrations, radiations, lack of sleep, Aggressive behaviour, mental illiness, depression,  caused due to over usage of mobile phones.

We also discussed about how mobile has impacted the students life, advantages and disadvantages of mobile in teaching learning process.

We also gave picture observation as group activity to students on knowing how the people misuse mobiles in public places and in which public places the mobiles are banned.

Totally for 255 students we created awareness program.

BHS college Jayanagar - 6th sem BSC Electronics Students – 35 students
BHS Vijaya PU College - 2nd year PU Students – Section 1 – 45 students
BHS Vijaya PU College - 2nd year PU Students – Section 2 – 20 students
BHS college Jayanagar – Bcom, Degree – Online Class – 15 students
Surana College Basavanagudi,  2nd year commerce Students – Section 1 – 45 students
Surana College Basavanagudi,  2nd year commerce Students – Section 2 – 95 students

Reporting and Recording

We have recorderd the video and audio. Captured photos and collected students opinion data in spreadsheets for knowing their initial nature towards mobile usage.

Challenges faced in the activities

Feedback from students and teachers were very impressive.
Students were very supportive and were actively participating in the questioning and answering section.
As student teachers our purpose of creating awareness program and objective for conducting this community based project was achieved.

The teachers who gave the classes in the school were happy that students were not bored and this session was useful for them and as apart of community project the youths were exposed to ill efffects of excessive usage of mobiles.

They gave feedback that it was their pleasure to have us in their college as students got opportunity to mould their behaviour in right direction. They got some right guidance and started thinking in right direction towards how to use technology safely without having its adverse effects on them.

Some of the challenges faced by us was that, each day based on the permission given by colleges we had to plan immediately during evening and night about our presentation and co-ordination, for taking classes the next day.
Sometimes we had to take decission immediately and spontaneously about who will present what, in which order, what activities to be executed for this particular class.

We had planned to take only 1 hour class, but was told to take 2 hour class in parallel in both BHS college and Surana college.
Immediate decission we had to take was among the 10 members. Also we had planned to conduct survey using mobile, but students had not brought the mobiles, so we did oral survey. On the spot different decision was made and executed.

We could make out that among the 5 members in a single class, 2 were dominating while speaking in the class.
Though while planning equal time distribution was given for all team members to speak in front of students, the presentation was modified and executed.

Another challege was that we had prepared ppt and taught of using projector, but colleges did not provide us projector, so we alter the plan and shifted from using ppt to interaction, discussion, questioning and group activity.

One more challenge we faced was the online class didi not start on time as students were not notified on time due to communication gap, then later 15 students came to online class and took the survey.

Apart from that we also took opportunity to give awareness program for 15 to 25 minutes for Bcom students online and Bsc students in the lab. Though the period was for short duration, there was some impact on the students.

For conducting this awareness program we used team teaching approach and we learnt many new things, like co-operating, involving students, motivating, creating interest, encouraging, supporting teachers team with each other, etc.
Conclusion
I was happy to conduct the survey by B.Ed. students of Vijaya Teachers College (CTE) as part of 4th semester Post internship activity under the guidance of TDP and MPK sir.
We used the Standard tool - Mobile Phone Addiction: MPAS scale by Dr.A.Velayudhan and Dr.S.Srividya (2012) was very useful and helped to collect the students opinion to know, how much mobile has impacted on their behaviour.
Students gave good response towards awareness program and promised to use the mobile in effective way after knowing how excessive use of mobile will effect physical health and mental health.
Thus this community based project on how mobile imapacted on students and how they are using it in present day awareness program fulfills our set of objectives and gave good learning experience for the college students.
